Basic Principles of fyto-pharmaceuticals

The best form of medicine is prevention, and our food and food habits have a major part in this. In our hasty western world food has suffered from a huge deterioration due to economies of scale, which have only one interest: a higher profit margin at the end of the year. Yet, food IS medicine: it forms the basis for the generation of our genetic material, energy, supplies of essential blocks such as vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. In short: good food will ensure a healthy body and mind.

For our primary carbohydrates we depend on nature, more specifically all sorts of grains: corn, wheat, rice, barley… At the same time we see that there is a parallel chemical ecology; depending on the biological conditions plants will generate secondary components which form a natural defence against pathogens. These secondary components can also be useful to humans. This is one of the principles of fyto pharmaceuticals: the apt use of those plant components which assist us improve our health condition.

There is an enormous pile of scientific evidence which proves that there is a direct causal connection between a) food and the presence of carcinogenous elements in our environment: synthetic components such as insecticides, pesticides, chemical food additives, PCBs, … and b) the generation of cancer, heart- and blood vessel diseases, diabetes and a high blood pressure.

The concept ‘Functional foods’ refers to food which has added value for the human health or body functions. Other names are nutricens, nutriceuticals or nutricaments, and if they are of biological origin, they are named “fytonutrients”.

The science of nutrition has made great advances in the last decennia. It has been proven that there are a lot of bio-active components which can be used to enhance the quality of our food and thus our general health condition.

Bio active nutrients are generally present in botanical nutrients (vergetables and fruit, herbs, grains). Research has shown that nutritional extracts tend to imprvoe the cell-to-cell communication, can repair DNA damage, remove toxins, improve anti-oxidant function, and stimulate the immune system.
Industrial farming and massive depletion of natural space and resources may make our food look nice, but loose all its flavour and vitamins. On top of that, food grown this way contains a lot of toxic residues because of use of pesticides etc. This is where fyto-pharmaceutical food supplements can prove their utility.
